Dr. Nancy Wheeler is a psychiatrist with a private practice in Annapolis for over ten years. Dr. Wheeler treats adolescent and adult patients. She works in the following capacities:
Psychopharmacologist:
Many patients come to Dr. Wheeler seeking medication for various mental health conditions. Dr. Wheeler accepts patients who are considering medication for the first time as well as patients with complex medication histories. Dr. Wheeler believes strongly in patient education and working together collaboratively. Respect for patient beliefs and concerns is paramount. With patient permission, Dr. Wheeler will consult with other providers to help ensure continuity of care.
Second-opinion Psychopharmacology Consultation:
Dr. Wheeler welcomes patients who would like a one-time evaluation of diagnosis and current treatment.
Psychotherapy:
Some patients prefer not to take medication, or they prefer to have therapy done with their prescribing psychiatrist. Dr. Wheeler believes strongly in the value of psychotherapy to help patients with insight, symptom improvement, and improved mental health.
Medication Management as Part of a Treatment Team:
Dr. Wheeler welcomes patients who already have a therapist and who are considering medication. She works collaboratively with many local therapists in an effort to optimize patient outcomes. Dr. Wheeler will also refer patients to local therapists if a treatment-team approach seems more appropriate.
Meetings with Family/Friends:
Dr. Wheeler is happy to meet with family and friends if the patient chooses. This is often an opportunity to educate loved ones in how to help the patient toward greater mental health.
Consultations with Other Psychopharmacologists:
With some complex cases, Dr. Wheeler may ask the patient's permission to discuss his/her case with a colleague. She has traditionally consulted with a small number of well-regarded psychiatrists at local academic centers.
Some things Dr. Wheeler does not do:
Disability Evaluations on New Patients: Dr. Wheeler believes it takes about six to twelve months to fully determine if a patient is disabled and unable to work.
Serve as an Expert Witness in Legal Proceedings: Dr. Wheeler can refer patients to a forensic psychiatrist if they need an expert witness to testify on their behalf.
Accept gifts or honorariae from pharmaceutical companies.
Dr. Wheeler shares an office with other mental health professionals, including another psychiatrist, a couples' therapist, and individual therapists with expertise in various mental health conditions.
Dr. Wheeler's friendly and caring office managers, Pat and Linda, are usually the first people patients meet in the office. They welcomes calls about the practice and any questions a patient may have.
